RAiD is a game-changer for the global research community
Projects and activities can now be uniquely identified and tracked globally with reliable, persistent RAiD names, even after research closure
Achieved by:
-
Research projects and activities are assigned unique and persistent RAiD name identifiers and metadata records
-
Open RAiD information can be viewed and updated at any stage of a project or activity’s life, even after closure
-
Open RAiDs are discoverable on their hosted RAiD system at any time via a web browser
-
RAiDs are accessible via an actionable DOI RAiD proxy server URL (https) via a web browser
-
RAiD uses a persistent identifier (PID) based on the Handle System® and more specifically, a DOI RAiD handle ‘10.25’ for every minted RAiD name
-
RAiD’s DOI RAiD handle is governed by DOI ISO 26324:2012 and the DOI Handbook® 10.1000/182
-
RAiD is standardised by RAiD ISO 23527:2022 and AU/NZS ISO 23527:2023 – with the ARDC appointed as RAiD’s Registration Authority
-
RAiD supports consistent RAiD tracking by recording all associated PIDs and other identifiers in one place (e.g. ORCIDs, RORs, Crossref DOIs, DataCite DOIs).
Open (public) RAiDs allow difficult-to-gather, non-sensitive research information to be viewed, shared and interrelated with other RAiD projects using FAIR data principles
Achieved by:
-
RAiDs provide a visible and reliable global collection and tracking point for non-sensitive and project information in the public domain
-
RAiDs store project inputs and outputs that are often lost, hard-to-find, forgotten or superseded
-
RAiDs allow project interrelationships to be identified, shared or linked with other RAiD projects
-
RAiD provides research data provenance, which ensures that project outputs are attributable and reportable
-
RAiD connects research communities amid frequently changing project activities
-
RAiD is part of the global persistent identifier (PID) graph – a map of connections between researchers and their work around the world.
RAiD can be co-developed and integrated into an organisation’s software platforms for time-saving benefits
Achieved by:
-
RAiD can be co-developed or developed for a customised research organisation approach (check first with the ARDC for some conditions that apply)
-
RAID system integration is designed for automatic identifying and compiling of project metadata information for these blink-of-an-eye purposes:
-
minting and updating of new RAiDs
-
research submission preparation and approvals between research organisations
-
strategic planning and reporting of project inputs, outputs, outcomes and impacts over time.
Open source RAiD system setup
The RAiD system and its setup are developed as open source (within the public domain), including any project information that is stored on a RAiD metadata record
RAiD ISO standard dependency
RAiD's international ISO 23527 – Information and documentation — Research activity identifier (RAiD) ensures that all minted RAiDs are governed in the same way, making RAiD discovery and access reliable and repeatable via a web browser, or a RAiD system’s computer or human interface
RAiD Metadata Schema transparency
All new RAiD names are minted with a DOI RAiD handle in their prefix, as per the RAiD ISO 23527:2022, RAiD Metadata Schema, DOI ISO 26324:2012 and the DOI Handbook® 10.1000/182.
A trusted RAiD Registration Authority
The ARDC is ISO 23527’s approved governance body – an Australian research data management leader supported by the Australian Government and well-respected across the global research community
DOI Foundation membership
The ARDC has received a standardised DOI RAiD handle ‘10.25’ from the DOI Foundation for the minting of sustainable RAiDs. The DOI ISO 26324 and DOI Handbook® 10.1000/182 govern the use and syntax of this DOI RAiD handle
Decentralised RAiD management
RAiD minting and management is undertaken by one or more RAiD service points appointed by a RAiD Registration Agency; each Registration Agency provides their service points with access to a RAiD system
Registration Agency oversight
RAiD Registration Agencies provide a RAiD service with access to a RAiD system to its designated RAiD service points for the minting of RAiDs and their administrative management
Global connectivity in using RAiD
When RAiDs are linked together, research organisations can collaborate, report or plan with their stakeholders and project teams
Embargoed RAiDs are temporary
As many projects are confidential during early development, a RAiD may be embargoed (made inaccessible) for only up to 18 months – this enables sustainable, equitable and FAIR access to RAiDs globally
